Project Overview:

Boyd Electric, Inc. performed a pilot study on a group of guest rooms to show the Four Seasons Hotel energy savings they could incur with energy-efficient technologies. Boyd Electric, Inc. programmable thermostats and controllers were installed in guest rooms with Boyd Electric, Inc. software system that analyzed the real-time power consumption of the guest rooms. These technologies observed the HVAC units in each of the guest rooms throughout the day and compared the room’s consumption during their “checked-in” and “check-out” states.


The pilot study showed that Boyd Electric, Inc. could reduce the Four Seasons Hotel’s HVAC run time on average of 2.7 hours per day, resulting in a savings of approximately 28% and a carbon reduction of 845 tons. This does not fully take into account the unknown annual occupancy percentage, which could improve this number significantly. This resulted in a return on investment of less than three years. 


Because of the savings shown in this pilot study, Four Seasons Hotel Chicago asked Boyd Electric, Inc. to supply and oversee the installation of the programmable thermostats and software system in all 343 guest rooms.
